Did you know that there is a World Osteoporosis Day? It is celebrated every 20th of October. And it has been celebrated since 1997! Last October 29, 2010 I was invited to a Pfizer event called “Love Your Bones“
Its pretty self explanatory and I could not have agreed more. As a full time mom and with a growing baby I need all the strength I can get!
They actually had a bone measurement device that allowed them to check and give you an estimated report on your bone density (fyi bone density means the amount of minerals in your bones). Results would say if your bones are in normal state or if they find a that you are in risk of having osteoporosis. I had mine done and if you would think that a 24-year old like me would have strong bones at a young age, you’re wrong!
If you didn’t notice, in the result findings, they ticked that I my result was Osteopenia. What is Osteopenia, you ask me? I didn’t know at first, but it said ‘Osteo’ on the word itself so I knew it wasn’t too good. It meant that my bone mineral density is lower than normal. In short, I may or may not be a candidate for osteoporosis. Which makes sense, because I remember when I was a kid I ALMOST had to wear a back brace. Thank goodness my mum got into sports and yoga, and not have to go through that! Whew!
The event was very informative. It was hosted by the lovely Ms Andi Manzano (If you haven’t seen her baby Olivia you have to, follow her ig @oliviareyes) We had a little live cooking show from the chef’s of Holiday Inn, Makati that showed us how to easily make quiche at home. Quiche?? Yes quiche. It is a great snack/meal to make at home for the family that is packed with the food group that is good for our bones. What’s great about a good quiche is you can customized what you wanna put in it. Yummy!
There were other speakers such as Ms. Ana (bikhram yoga expert and teacher) who was kind enough to show us a few yoga moves/stretches that we can easily do at home and in our own time to prevent this silent killer (Osteoporosis). Why silent? Well according to Dra. Julie osteoporosis is considered a silent killer. Nobody knows their actual bone density state, and for all you know you have it already. She has some patients who accidentally slip and has broken their hip, spine fractures, and some who just cough and breaks their bone because they’re so weak and brittle. Anything can happen at any given time. That is why this campaign was created, to spread awareness.
As I was saying, as a mom with a growing baby, I need all the strength I can get. With knowing that I may or may not be a candidate for osteoporosis is scary! Prevention is key! I still need to carry Kheira everywhere we go (I know I don’t have to but I love to lol) Baby-wearing can take its toll on your back as well as breastfeeding. Thanks to Caltrate Plus I can have that prevention. I was taking Caltrate Plus as well when I was pregnant, I just need to be consistent this time! I have an upcoming toddler and I still need to run around with her! We still have a load of playtime to conquer and a lot of carrying her and CARING for her. Mommy needs to be strong and healthy for all of that!
